Body Art, Figure 8 Ink Studios

I recently found my son’s Instagram and Facebook photos of of his tattoo art. Of course, I am biased; therefore, I am going to say…his work is amazing. He has over 20 years of experience tattooing, but he’s had artistic talent all his life. As a previous non-artist, I never realized the pre-work involved prior to completing an art piece on a customer. Unlike traditional artists, the tattoo artist uses the human body as the canvas. Just a month ago, I spent the night at my son’s home watching him meticulously prepare the art on paper which he was “inking” the next day on a customer. It was a complicated, impressive piece, which took him several hours to complete.

As a mom…I remember my son growing up doodling on scraps of paper. I even have a piece of art from his middle school days…a poster he completed promoting recycling. Unfortunately, I rarely encouraged my children during their early years of growing up to be creative. I guess, it was a generational decision, since I was expected by my parents, to concentrate on academics. Art was insignificant in my parent’s eyes.  Although in my younger years I had artistic talent, my talent was squashed by my parents. It’s a wonder that my son developed into the tattoo artist that he is today. If I were to do it again, I would have done a better job encouraging my son’s artistic abilities.

Today, I make it a point to encourage my grandchildren to act when they are inspired to be creative. There are many benefits to art. Based on an article from PBS PARENTS, creativity benefits in the development of motor skills, language, decision making, visual learning, inventiveness and improved academic performance.

Since this IS an artist blog, I thought it would be nice to share some of my son’s art. What makes Figure 8 Ink Studios , the company that he works for, unique, is the studio is also an art school offering classes to the community. I’ve not been to the location, but the web-site is impressive offering a variety of classes. If you are in the area, check them out!
